Life of Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela full name Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela an anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician and President of South Africa was born on 18 July 1918 in the village Madiba.






He was known for anti-apartheid movement. When he was 12 years old, he lost his father. He attended primary school in Qunu and completed his Junior Certificate at Clarkebury Boarding Institute and began his Bachelor of Art degree at the University College of Fort Hare but he was expelled from there due to joining a student protest. 

In August 1952 he and Oliver Tambo established South African's first black law firm, Mandela and Tambo. When he was living in Johannesburg he involved in anti-colonial politics and became a founder member of the ANC's Youth League. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the state. He served 27 years in different prisons in his life. After attempting some international lobbied for his release, finally he released in 1990. 

Though he was blamed as a communist terrorist in his life, nevertheless gained international acclaim for his activism, received more than 250 honors, including Nobel Peace Prize, and the Soviet Order of Lenin, the US Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is also called "Father of the Nation" in South Africa.

In honor of Nelson Mandela United Nation declared "Nelson Mandela International Day" or "Mandela Day", celebrated every year on 18 July, on his birthday. He wrote an autobiography "Long Walk to Freedom".


Nelson Mandela never wavered in his dedication to democracy. Mandela died on 5 December 2013 suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection, at the age of 95.
